Journeyman Electrician:
SUMMARY
The Journeyman Electrician provides safe and efficient service in the installation or repair of electric systems and motors. This position is responsible for developing member and public understanding and acceptance of the Dakota Energy Cooperative, Inc.’s objectives, policies, and programs. Additionally, the Journeyman Electrician must promote safe working conditions through adherence to all established safety rules and practices.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Installs and repairs electrical wiring and equipment, as directed.
- Performs diagnostic testing and repairs on electric motors.
- Completes job tickets, time sheets, and other required records.
- Responds to and handles trouble calls and outages of members and non-members outside of normal hours, as directed.
- Promotes load management and the installation of equipment to members. Responds to members inquiries regarding load management.
- Remains informed, recommends and installs services, and maintains inventory of meters.
- Ensures that truck, tools and equipment assigned are properly used and kept in good. See that shop material is kept in good condition and organized.
- Collects delinquent accounts, as directed.
- Estimates electric wiring and electric wiring installations, as directed.
- Familiarizes oneself with operations of two-way communication equipment and rules and regulations governing use of the equipment.
- Ensures that all safety precautions and practices are rigidly observed.
- Develops increased member understanding and acceptance of the Cooperative’s objectives, plans, policies and programs, and assists them with wiring problems and inquiries.
- Assists in promoting a power use program by acquainting the members with new and more efficient uses of electricity to make living easier and more productive.
- Promotes good public relations by taking advantage of every opportunity to gain public understanding and acceptance of the Cooperative’s plans, programs and objectives.
- Provides the member’s superior service. Responds to member requests or refers them to appropriate personnel. Remains familiar with all Cooperative policies and procedures.
- Projects a positive image of the Cooperative and maintains a friendly, cooperative relationship with the public in the performance of all responsibilities.
- Participates in Safety Meetings and other training sessions.
- Performs additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED), required.
- An Associate degree or two (2) year diploma in Electrical Construction and Maintenance from an accredited vocational school.
- Possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
- Possess a valid Journeyman Electrician’s License.
- Ability to operate all related equipment, including a trencher, to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Thorough knowledge of construction and maintenance of residential, commercial and industrial wiring.
- Trained and able to perform First Aid and CPR.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computers and major software programs applicable to electrician’s position.
- Familiarity with the Cooperative systems geography and system maps.
- Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code and RUS Materials Specifications.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, staking sheets, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to complete routine reports and other paperwork, as directed.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to carry out instructions presented in written, oral or diagram form.
- Ability to recognize and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to organize, multi-task, plan, and set priorities with minimal supervision.
- Ability to encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation amongst team members.
- Ability to exercise good judgment with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of the Cooperative.
- Demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy in daily interaction with cooperative members and staff.
Physical Demands of the Position:
- Ability to hear (including faint arcing sounds or humming), use near and far vision, stand, walk, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, twist upper body, and manipulate a variety of objects and tools using arms, hands, and fingers.
- Ability to climb a ladder.
- Ability to lift up to one hundred (100) pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to one hundred fifty (150) pounds.
- Ability to operate controls while sitting in a vehicle driving, operating aerial lift, and operating trencher.
- Ability to hear and communicate over a two-way radio between various locations.
Working Conditions:
- Frequently exposed to high, precarious places, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock.
- Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, and vibration. Moderate noise level.
- Must be able to respond to emergency situations timely.
