ANNUAL POLE TESTING: WHAT TO KNOW

Each fall, Dakota Energy begins an important part of its system-maintenance program: annual pole testing. Approximately 1,900 poles are inspected each year as part of a nine- to 10-year rotation designed to ensure every pole is routinely evaluated.

This inspection schedule also supports the maintenance practices outlined in Dakota Energy’s Wildfire Mitigation Plan. Regular testing helps the Cooperative identify deterioration, prioritize replacements, and address potential concerns before they affect the safety or reliability of the electric system.

WHAT CREWS INSPECT

Pole testing is completed by EXO, a Texas-based company with crews working throughout South Dakota and Minnesota. This fall, members may see EXO crews inspecting poles in the Highmore and Huron areas of Dakota Energy’s service territory.

While the condition of each pole is the primary focus, crews also look beyond the pole itself. Inspectors watch for damaged lines, hardware, and other materials that may need attention. This provides Dakota Energy with a broader view of the condition of the system in each area being inspected.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A PROBLEM IS FOUND?

If inspectors discover an issue requiring immediate attention, EXO contacts Dakota Energy right away so the Operations Department can evaluate and address it.

Deteriorated poles that do not require an immediate response are documented and reported to Dakota Energy’s Operations Manager. Those poles are then added to the Cooperative’s replacement schedule. Depending on the timing of other construction projects, replacements will be completed by the end of 2026 or during the early part of 2027.

Annual pole testing gives Dakota Energy the information needed to plan maintenance, prioritize construction, and continue providing members with safe and reliable electric service.
