SOUTH DAKOTA ONE CALL - UNDERGROUND LOCATE

If you plan to dig, trench, or excavate, knowing what's underground is critical.

South Dakota One Call is a communication link among utilities, contractors, and individuals working near underground lines and pipes. State law requires you to contact South Dakota One Call at least two working days before excavation begins.

Call 811 or 1-800-781-7474 (toll free)

South Dakota One Call maintains records for electric lines, gas lines, telephone and communication lines, and other utility facilities. Calling before you dig helps avoid service interruptions, costly repairs, injuries, and potentially serious incidents.

South Dakota One Call does not maintain records for privately owned lines or pipes. Dakota Energy can locate privately owned electric lines, although a fee may apply.

EMERGENCY STANDBY GENERATORS

Emergency standby generators that are improperly connected can create extremely dangerous conditions, including electrocution hazards and damage to electrical equipment. Before installing any standby generation, contact Dakota Energy.

Dakota Energy installs the required 100‑amp double‑throw transfer switch for a $300 charge. When operating a standby generator, this switch is required.

The Transfer Switch Helps:

  • Protect the public, neighbors, and Dakota Energy personnel from accidental electrocution
  • Prevent backfeed electricity from energizing utility lines
  • Protect your electrical equipment, and neighboring systems, from serious damage
RIGHTS-OF-WAY

Maintaining clear rights‑of‑way is essential for the safe and dependable operation of distribution power lines.

Trees and brush contacting electric lines may cause power outages, create fire hazards, or endanger children or others climbing nearby trees. Trees or vegetation that threaten the reliability of electric service may be trimmed or removed by Dakota Energy as needed.

RIGHTS-OF-ACCESS

To provide safe and dependable electric service, Dakota Energy employees and authorized agents must have reasonable access to service locations.

Access is necessary to read meters; test, repair, or replace Dakota Energy‑owned equipment; and connect or disconnect electric service. Providing access allows Dakota Energy to respond promptly to service needs and safety concerns.
